Dan Fontas - General Manager
Dan Fontas enters his thirteenth year with The Hockey Academy and his eighth as General Manager / Coach of the New England Stars Junior A team. Dan has become well respected in the hockey community for his passion and ability in developing young hockey pla yers. Dan has had a tremendous experience in the game of hockey and has been fortunate enough to be able to learn from a number of distinguished players and coaches over his career. His passion for the game and his intentions for his players bring only positive results in the game of hockey and the development of life. His past accolades have included: Captain Cushing Academy (1998), last Cushing team to win New England Prep School Championship (NEPSAC), UMass-Lowell, Hockey East (1998-2002), helped team to highest ever ranking in the programs history at #3 in NCAA Division 1, Indianapolis Ice, CHL, (2002), UMass-Lowell Volunteer Coach (2003), 2006 MVC/DCL Division 1 Coach of the Year, 2006 Metro-West Daily News Coach of the Year.
From 2003-2008, Dan was the Head Coach of the Acton-Boxboro High School Colonials Boys Varsity team. From 2008-2012 Dan was the head Coach of the Stars Junior A team which he led to the 2009 International Junior Hockey League (IJHL) Championship and 3 Conference Championship series in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Fontas Currently resides in Milford, NH with his wife Crystal and their two children, Mia, 7 and Reid, 4.
Darryl Green- Head Coach
Head coach Darryl Green returns for his seventh season with the Stars and sixth as head coach. Green has led the Stars to an overall record of 111-86-27. More importantly Coach Green has coached 30 Stars players that have moved on to higher levels of junior, European professional leagues, and NCAA Division I and II/III. Green’s teams are always well prepared, hardworking, and disciplined. Green believes that development and a team first mentality breeds winning and player advancement.
Green began coaching while in college for The Hockey Academy. When his playing career ended he added split season midget teams and was Joe Mallen’s Assistant Coach at Middlesex School from 2005-2007. Middlesex won their only ISL championship in 2007. From there, Green was volunteer coach at his Alma Mater University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) for one season, 2007-08. The next year Green led the Nashua North Titans (NH high school) to their first winning season in history. In 2010-11 Green was hired at UML as Assistant Coach where he was responsible for recruiting, video review, and special teams. The following season, 2011-12 was Green’s first with the Stars. He served as Associate Head Coach under current Stars GM Dan Fontas.
Green’s playing career featured five years of junior hockey, three years of college hockey, and two years on minor league professional hockey. Green, a defenseman, played for the Stratford Cullitons from 1994-96, winning the Ontario Hockey Association’s (OHA) Sutherland Cup in 1995. After a brief stint with the Ontario Hockey League’s Soo Greyhounds in 1996-97, Green began playing for the OHA’s Chatham Maroons. In 1999 Green captained the Maroons to their first and only Sutherland Cup.
Green’s junior hockey career led him to Hockey East’s UML in 1999. Due to his time in the OHL Green sat out his freshman year but played 101 games over three seasons accumulating 48 points in the process. After UML he toiled in the ECHL playing for the Wichita Thunder and Pee Dee pride.
Currently, Green lives in Milford NH with his wife Nikki, and daughter Carly and son Luke. During the day, Mr. Green teaches science at Nashua High North. Green earned his Bachelor’s of Liberal Arts Degree from UML in 2003 and his Master’s of Education in Athletic Administration from Endicott College in 2014.
Ryan Casey - Assistant Coach / Goalie Coach
Pelham NH native, Ryan Casey, enter his fourth season with the Stars. Casey who was a goaltender at Nichols College (ECAC Northeast Division III) will be in an active role with the Junior program as well as the youth program. "We are very excited to have Ryan become part of our program," said General manger Dan Fontas. "He is a great addition to our program. Having an assistant coachandgoalie coach present at all of our junior practices will be a huge bonus for our goaltenders. He will also be very active with our youth goalies too."
Casey who starred for Austin Prepfrom 2003-2007 was a 2-time league all-star and 2-time CCL Champion during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. As a Junior he stymied Acton-Boxboro 4-1 in a Super Eight play in game. The Head Coach at the time for AB, yep,was Stars General Manager Dan Fontas. "I remember that game like it was yesterday," said Fontas. "Ryan shut us down, he was spectacular in that game."
Casey would then move on to the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). During the 2008/09 he suited up for the Bridgewater Bandits and during the2009/10 season he played for Andy Heinze of the Valley Junior Warriors. After two seasons of Junior Hockey , Casey finished his playing career at Nichols College in 2012.
Ryan has also been very active in the coaching ranks during his playing time as he has worked directly for Mike Buckley (Goaltending coach of Umass Amherst), Paul Vincent (Power Skating), and Louis Chabot (Chabot Hockey Programs). Ryan was an Assistant Coach of '97 birth year Minuteman Flames from 2007-2009 as well as Assistant Coach of '98 birth year Assabet Valley from 2005-2007.
Levi Marden -Director of Hockey Operations
Jocelyne MacDonald, PT, DPT, LAT, ATC
Athletic Trainer/ Physical Therapist
Dr. MacDonald has been with the New England Stars since 2014, providing Athletic Training and Physical Therapy services. Prior to joining the Stars she gained a broad range of experience working as both an Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist. She began her studies in Athletic Training at the University of New England where she received her Bachelors of Science. After completion, she furthered her education at MGH Institute of Health Professions, attaining her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Jocelyne gained experience in collegiate sports rehabilitation while working with men’s ice hockey, rugby, basketball, lacrosse, and various other teams. Additionally, she has experience in general orthopedics, post-operative rehabilitation, concussion management and rehabilitation, and sports specific conditioning. She also practices as a pediatric physical therapist. Dr. MacDonald is fully licensed in MA as a Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer.
Scott Prunier -Strength Coach
Scott enters his second season with the Stars organization.Scott is thefounder, head trainer and program director for TOP Fitness, which was established in 2002, and operates out of Conway Arena in Nashua, NH. A Graduate of Plymouth Stae University, Scott has worked with may top athlets in the Southern New Hampshire area as well asthe Boston Red Sox and the Philladelphia Phillies. Scott holds many certifications including Certified NSCA - Strength and Conditioning and a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist
